In spite of having the World’s Most Suspicious Mother, Miss Management is a trusting individual. Some might say gullible. Some might even say that gullible is written on the ceiling. Miss Management might check and see.
In spite of being depressed for the better part of 25 years, Miss Management is an optimist and has somehow persisted with an obliviously rosy outlook. One day, Miss Management went for an early morning hike with a friend, who, upon learning that Miss Management was going to hike anyway, friend or not, said, aren’t you afraid you’re going to be murdered? Well, no, Miss Management was not afraid of being murdered, raped, or having her organs stolen and sold on the black market.
Miss Management is trusting of people, too. She trusts that people have good intentions (except, ya know, the current Presidential administration). She trusts that people aren’t going to steal from her (yes, Miss Management recognizes the privilege here). She trusts that people will mostly be kind and nice and act in most situations the same way that she would.
Miss Management manages this way as well. Miss Management works with adults and trusts that they will work and behave like adults. She trusts that they will arrive at work at a reasonable time and do their work and get their work done and stay as long as they need. She assumes they will work out problems calmly with one another. She also trusts that her colleagues are honest and up front with her. And, most of all, she trusts that when people act like they like her, they actually, honestly do like her.
Oh, Miss Management.
You are 45 years old and forgot the most basic lessons about work: don’t trust people. You don’t have friends there. It’s not safe there.
Of course it’s safe safe: the cops and all their stupid accessories are everywhere you look. Psychologically safe? Nah. There are no policies that say interactions in the workplace should be psychologically safe.
So. Miss Management is fucked. And she really should have known better.
The problem (in addition to the trusting problem), is that Miss Management is getting kind of old and ornery. She is lazy and doesn’t want to put the work into changing her attitude, let alone remembering what not to say at work. In the long run, it’s just easier to assume that everyone is who they seem to be and their intentions are good (current Presidential administration aside). If Miss Management has to put work into second guessing everyone, does that mean Miss Management has to change as well? It takes a lot of effort to put on a whole different persona just to make a buck. Miss Management doesn’t even dry her hair in the morning; she can’t imagine pouring herself into different personas to fit a given situation, and then craftily figuring out who to eliminate to get to the top. She hates Survivor.
Miss Management might be fucked, but…she’s ok, in spite of the misjudgments.
Everyone else can get fucked.
