Thoughts in a variety of flavors…with a heavy dose of salt

Miss Management and the Porcupine

In which Miss Management shares hard lessons from middle management, in the hopes that you won’t repeat her mistakes.

MIss Management is frequently disraught over issues large and small, at home and at work. This means she is frequently tearful in public at inopportune times, including the workplace. This is not typically considered management material, but, Miss Management did not hire herself, although, to be fair, she did not cry during her interview.

Also, if the workplace wasn’t built and still ruled by the patriarchy, perhaps crying in the office wouldn’t matter. However, until then Miss Management is changing the work environment one teardrop at a time.

Miss Management recently had to leave work only 30 minutes into her day because she just could not keep her shit together. People can truly be bitches and it makes Miss Management cry. As an aside, Miss Management truly appreciates the ability to work from home, where she can cry and work at the same time.

Later on, Miss Management moaned to her therapist about how she wished she would be a different person who managed her discontent differently. Miss Management’s therapist wisely pointed out that she could choose to show her stress and anger instead by lashing out at everyone around her at work and making everyone in the office feel bad, rather than just crying, which really only affects Miss Management.

The next week, Miss Management was at a meeting which was rife with uncertainty about coming changes and team member expressed her stress over the situation by prickling with aggression and quickly quilling everyone else on the team. If the team member were truly a porcupine in that moment, everyone would have walked out covered in quills.

The porcupine in question also spies on other employees and threatens to call the union should someone step out of line. So stabby! And certainly no way to make friends.

The moral of this workplace story? If you must be a mess at work, better to be a salty puddle of human sadness with your office door shut than a vindictive porcupine who copes with stress by hurting everyone around you.
